RIP Rix Myth

posted by Free Press Houston @ 5:05 PM

One of the more enduring and seminal figures of The Montrose and the Houston Music scene is no more.

Rick Smith, AKA Rix Myth, AKA many other names and personae, died at home last night. Rick was on the short list of contributors to Public News and, Houstion's Other and Free Press Houston. He produced innovative and distinctive radio programming for KPFT, Montrose Radio, and Earthwire.net. He was a comedy writer, graphic designer, a film maker, friend to many and adversary to none. More details will be posted as they emerge. The one thing that is known for certain at this writing is that he will be sorely missed.

AS cliche' as this may sound, Rick was the guy everybody loved and nobody disliked. It just shows that the nicest folks leave too soon and the good die young...

I will carry on with our show on KPFT, Messerschmitt World Domination Happy Hour. The next show will be a yet undecided archived show. Feel free to let me know if there is a show you'd like to hear.

Rick sounds very much like someone I would have loved to have known. I do know his family and my sympathies to them and all his friends. Funeral arrangements in Chronicle obits.

Rick's mom has posted this on his MySpace page:

"Hi All! It's Rick's mom again. We are having Rick's funeral on Tues. morning at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 1111 S. Cherry St. in Tomball. You all & Rick are probably saying, "WHAT THE F@*K??? A CATHOLIC church????" Yes, my son was raised a Catholic & attended weekly Mass until he escaped from my grasp! Alas.... So I'm doing the Catholic bit for my daughter's & my sake. We'll party in Rick's style later! There will be an obituary in Sunday's Chronicle, but it will only be running for one day. Again, my family & I wish to thank you all for the love, condolences, calls, messages & love you send to us & to one another. You all are my link to Rick...you ARE Rick to me, & I cherish the gift of you. I hope I get to hug each & every one of you at Rick's funeral!! And please keep us informed about the planned get-together at Rudyard's--my family & I dearly wish to attend. It will be a godsend to us, & right now, having that event to look forward to is one more thing that is helping me to "keep it together." Love & God bless to you all!
Maria"
