An emerging trend in next-gen game development is that developers are having to push back release dates more so now than in previous generations. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was the most recent upsetting delay, until last week, when a Take Two conference call revealed that Grand Theft Auto IV (GTAIV), will be delayed to second quarter 08 (February-April).

Second 1/4 of 08? Is spring really a good time to launch?

@ Donnie:

Historically Spring, while not the best season for gaming, is actually a better season to release a game in than Summer. Obviously, Fall and Winter are the biggest times of the year for gaming, but think back not too far, and remember that Resident Evil 4 for the Nintendo GameCube came out in January. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion too came out in June.

Two other things to consider is that coming out in the Spring/Summer time will help gamers get more time with Grand Theft Auto IV, as they'll be done with all the AAA games this Holiday, and it could breath life into the vacant cesspool of gaming that is Summer.

Now, look at how Mario Galaxy, which was supposed to be a Launch title for the Nintendo Wii, was later pushed back to second 1/4 08, and then later pushed all the way back to Winter 08. Me thinks this may happen here with GTA IV. The only thing that could stop such a situation would be the exclusive content that RockStar is making for the Xbox 360. Microsoft forked over fifty-million dollars for those exclusive episodes, I don't think they'll take to it lightly if GTA IV doesn't ship till Winter 08.

thanks man, I really am a huge gaming nerd. I was lucky to have an older brother of nine years, who is a bigger nerd than I, get into games before I was even born. I was playing Atari before I could speak.
